The ocean is for everyone, and we believe that our identities and expression should be as expansive and diverse as the interconnected life within our seas. We also believe everyone should feel safe, comfortable and celebrated for the work they do in the maritime and conservation world. A study by the National Institute of health found that only 34% of queer people found the conservation world inclusive. One of the big factors cited for a lack of belonging within the LGBTQIA+ community is a lack of representation and fear of harassment or retaliation . In a recent report of sexual harassment in the marine science world over 78% of women have reported some form of harassment, with over 80% of women witnessing it. This is not okay, and unfortunately, for many of us, not surprising. Often times these instances are underreported due to the position of power of the harasser or the fear it would harm the woman’s career. We are stronger together and we are not alone. We want to break this culture of silence, provide a sense of belonging and build a community of LGBTQIA+ and allies of whale nerds!
